Powerball Winners: a long list!
Powerball jackpot winners in 2016
2016 started off with a bang as US Powerball shattered all previous lottery jackpot records with an incredible $1.59 billion jackpot that was won by three lucky ticket holders. Lisa and John Robinson of Tennessee, The Nickel 95 Trust of Florida, and Marvin and Mae Acosta held the winning tickets to this historic prize and became richer than they ever could’ve imagined and made history along the way! On 2 March James Stocklas of Florida was the only winner of the $291 million jackpot. The Smith Family Lottery Pool of New Jersey took home the third US Powerball jackpot of the year on 7 May, a sweet $429 million! Summer was sizzling for the Robin Egg 2016 Nominee Trust as they won $487 million on 30 July. As temperatures started to fall so did the jackpot. William and Heather ten Broeke of Georgia won $246 million on 17 September. Just after Black Friday started the holiday shopping season in the US the Tennessee 20 took home $421 million on 26 November. The last US Powerball jackpot was won on 17 December. It was $119 million and we’re still waiting to find out who the lucky winner(s) are!
Powerball jackpot winners in 2015
On 11 February 2015, we welcomed the first jackpot of 2015, that was won and equally shared by three winners (among which Marie Holmes). This jackpot had been rolling over since early December and set the record for number of rollovers: 21 rollovers! In that rollover streak, the jackpot rose from its starting value of $40 million all the way to $564 million! On September 30, a woman by the name of Julie Leach, from Three Rivers, Michigan, won a $310.5 million Powerball jackpot – the second largest Powerball jackpot of the year and also the second largest lottery jackpot overall in 2015 – so far. We want to believe that more beautiful things are still to come in the American Powerball lottery!
Powerball jackpot winners in 2014
The first Powerball jackpot of 2014 was a homerun, to say the least! The jackpot rolled over until it reached the fabulous amount of $425 million! This jackpot, one of the biggest in the Powerball history (although not close to the $590.5 million Powerball record), was won by a single winner from California. B. Raymond Buxton came to the California Lotto headquarters to collect his win wearing a Star Wars t-shirt appropriately showing a Yoda-like one-liner: ‘Luck of the Jedi I have’.
The first Powerball jackpot of 2014 turned out to be the biggest one of the year – not just the biggest Powerball jackpot but also the biggest jackpot of all, worldwide. 2014 offered five more $100 million + jackpots, so it was definitely not a year to forget about. But, not close to a new Powerball jackpot record.
Powerball jackpot winners in 2013
The US Powerball lottery had an amazing year in 2013, with a total of nine jackpots of more than $100 million! Six of those even ended up passing the $200 million bar, with the $590 million jackpot of May as the definite highlight of the year!
Big Powerball winners – 2013 and before
However, not everyone who wins a giant jackpot chooses to remain unknown to the world. The US Powerball historic jackpot win of $590 million that happened in May 2013 was won by Gloria Mackenzie – an 84 year old woman from Florida. With this terrific prize, Gloria broke the old Powerball jackpot record of $588 million (divided among two winners) dating from November 2012. Gloria’s glorious jackpot win is still the highest Powerball jackpot ever won, and the third highest jackpot of all times behind the $656 million Mega Millions jackpot world record and the $648 million Mega Millions jackpot from December 2014.
Also in 2013, we saw a $448.4 million top prize in August (divided among three winning tickets – one of them belonging to 16 New Jersey co-workers), the already mentioned $400 million won by a sole winner from Columbia, South Carolina in September 2013, and a $216 million win on October 23rd of 2013, among other wins. In the past years, before the last Powerball number matrix change, there were noteworthy jackpot wins of $365 million (shared by eight people) in February 2006 and $340 million won by a fortunate family in October 2005.
What do we know about Powerball winners?
Well, that depends. If a jackpot winner chooses to remain anonymous, which is an option players have in some states, then there is really not so much that we can find out. For example, the Powerball winner of the gigantic $400 million jackpot on September 18th 2013, a man from the South Carolina city of Columbia, chose to remain anonymous, hence we have nothing more that we can say about this gentleman, unfortunately.
