If you’re reading this article, it’s probably because you didn’t win a share of the $1,586,400,000 Powerball jackpot divided between three lucky ticket holders in the draw on January 13, 2016. You probably noticed that the Powerball jackpot in the upcoming draw is a very attractive $255 million. So, play the Powerball now! And you may be wondering if we’ll see another billion dollar jackpot anytime soon.
Following January’s record-breaking draw, the Powerball jackpot came close to reaching the half billion dollar mark on three separate occasions. In May, the Smith Family Lottery Pool from January won a jackpot prize worth $429.6 million. Two months later, a single lucky player from New Hampshire won a jackpot of $487 million. And in November, a winning $421 million prize was divided between twenty co-workers at a Tennessee metal manufacturing plant.
The current Powerball jackpot has been rolling over since it was last won on December 17, 2016. In that draw, a lucky couple from Pennsylvania won a $121.6 million jackpot prize. The jackpot in Powerball’s upcoming draw on February 8, 2017, is double that amount. If no one wins the Powerball jackpot it could be on its way to once again reach a billion dollars.
How did we get to a billion dollar jackpot in the first place?
Before Powerball’s January 2016 draw, the world record for highest lottery jackpot was held by Mega Millions. Mega Millions awarded a $656 million jackpot in March 2012. Three winning tickets split that amazing prize.
Powerball twice came close to beating that record. It awarded a jackpot of $587.5 million in November 2012. It awarded a $590.5 million jackpot in May 2013. Mega Millions nearly broke its own record in December 2013. That month Mega Millions awarded a jackpot prize of $648 million, shared by two lucky winners.
And then Powerball changed its rules in October 2015. Before the change, lottery players picked five numbers from a pool of 59 balls and a Powerball from a separate pool of 35 balls. After the change, lottery players had a choice between 69 main numbers and a choice of 26 numbers for the Powerball. As a result, the odds of winning the jackpot changed from 1 in 175,223,510 to 1 in 292,201,338.
The change in Powerball rules made it more difficult to win the jackpot. The lottery’s organizers were prepared to see a billion dollar jackpot but didn’t think it would come so soon.
Another billion dollar jackpot in 2017?
The bigger the Powerball jackpot gets, the faster it grows. When it rolls over from draw to draw, the Powerball jackpot grows exponentially. It gets bigger faster and faster. A case in point is what happened in January 2016. The jackpot started the month at $300 million but less than two weeks later, it reached the incredible $1.58 billion.
There is no guarantee that the Powerball jackpot will pass the one billion dollar mark in 2017. However, there is no doubt that once the jackpot reaches a certain amount, it will create a snowball effect. More and more people will buy lottery tickets. The jackpot will grow quickly, possibly even faster than it did last year. And if that is the case, there will be another billion dollar jackpot very soon.
The only way to get a share of the Powerball jackpot is by playing the game. Purchase your Powerball tickets now!
