In accordance to California’s public disclosure laws, we now know the name of the lucky Powerball winner: Edwin Castro. However Mr Castro asked lottery officials not to disclose any biographical information. He also declined attending the news conference.

Lottery officials declared: “Edwin Castro’s name is now part of public record. As with all of our winners, but in an effort to balance transparency with privacy, that’s the only information that’s subject to public record,” 

Instead, Mr Castro chose to release a statement in which he expressed how “shocked” and “ecstatic” he is about his win. Moreover he expressed his gratitude over the fact that the California school system benefits from this win:

“As much as I am shocked and ecstatic to have won the Powerball drawing, the real winner is the California public school system. The mission of the California lottery, which is to provide supplemental funding for California public education both public schools and colleges, makes this a huge win for the state. As someone who received the rewards of being educated in the California public education system, it’s gratifying to hear that as a result of my win, the California school system greatly benefits as well.”

The November draw raised a record $156.3 Million for the California public school system according to Alva V. Johnson, California Lottery Director. He also added that that amount contributed to a record-setting fiscal year for the California Lottery, as more than $2 Billion were raised for public schools in 2022.

The California Lottery also mentioned how these funds help public education: “This funding is largely discretionary, meaning schools can use this for important, yet unfunded instructional programs they would otherwise not afford,”

Edwin Castro chose the lump sum payment rather than the annuity option; he therefore received $997.6 Million (before taxes!). His ticket, which was the only one matching all Powerball winning numbers 10-33-41-47-56/10, is now in the hands of the California Lottery. Lottery Officials have mentioned that they might choose to display the winning ticket.

When a winner comes forward in California, he or she receives a “Winner’s Handbook” which includes around 20 pages of recommendations for new lottery winners.

Edwin Castro purchased his US Powerball ticket at Joe’s Service Center on West Woodbury Road, Altadena.The shop was rewarded for selling a winning ticket with $1 Million.

A lone winning ticket scooped the world record $2.04 Billion Powerball jackpot after matching all six numbers drawn on November 7, 2022. The winning numbers were: 10-33-41-47-56/10. The conquering ticket was sold in Altadena, California.

The US Powerball jackpot was running since August 3, 2022 and was on its 41^st draw when it was finally won. The first estimate presented a $1.9 Billion but final sales pushed the jackpot to $2.04 Billion. This is the largest Powerball jackpot but also the world’s largest lottery prize, to date!

Powerball Product Group Chair & Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director, Drew Svitko said: “Congratulations, to the lucky ticket holder in California and the millions of other Powerball players who won other prizes in the drawing. On behalf of participating lotteries, I would like to thank our players who joined us on this historic jackpot run. A portion of every Powerball ticket purchased will stay in your state to support your local communities.”

This was also the opinion of Joseph Chahayed, the owner of the service station on West Woodbury Road were the winning ticket was purchased.

He said: “I’m happy for California; I’m happy for L.A. I’m more happy for Altadena. There are a lot of poor people here; they deserve it.” While his son, Danny Chahayed, added: “I’m hoping the person who won is actually from the community, so that way they know the struggles of the people around here and they can give back,”

The Powerball drawing of Monday, November 7 was delayed to the next morning at 8:57 a.m. EST after some technical issues were encountered. The Minnesota lottery requested additional time to finalize  its sales and play data.

Drew Svitko declared: “Protecting the integrity of the draw is of upmost importance, and we were able to do that during this historic drawing with the cooperation of all participating lotteries,”

The lucky Powerball winner of this historic jackpot has one year to claim his prize. As the ticket was purchased in California, the ticket-holder of the biggest Powerball prize will not be able to remain anonymous.

The Multi-State Lottery Association and the Powerball Product Group announced new major jackpot changes in 2020, that came into place starting April 8th, 2020. This came only days after their previous statement that was reducing the starting jackpot to $20 million with a minimum increase of $2 million between drawings. Now, the Powerball officials completely eliminated the guaranteed minimum amount as well as the minimum increase threshold. Previously, the US Powerball lottery had a starting jackpot of $40 million with minimum rollover increases of $10 million.

The US Powerball lottery has a brand-new jackpot winner as of Wednesday, January 29^th, 2020.
